Well here goes nothing. The first piece of critical content I'm releasing don't be too harsh on me.
One too many mornings - Bob Dylan
This is one of Dylan's earlier songs, it is on his third studio album. It is about a broken man just trying to get on with his life and struggling to find meaning in his days. It captures this stoicism and a melancholic feeling that I have never seen matched in any other song. I would recommend anyone who likes Bob Dylan to give it a listen. I think it is probably one of the best songs in Dylan’s discography. If only i had the words that would do it justice.
Mother - John Lennon
This emotional ballad opens up Lennon’s third solo album “Plastic Ono Band” thank God it does not feature Yoko Ono as it has some of the best vocals in all of rock.I discovered this song when I watched the John Lennon Biopic “Nowhere Boy” and I instantly wanted to hear it again and again. The song opens with Lennon’s heart felt cry for his mother, This instantly stuns you on the first listen as the delivery is so raw and heartfelt. It perfectly aligns with some of the more somber and more heartfelt songs on the album such as working class hero, while it still grasps this desperation as well as a want to just let go of the past. It feels like this whole era of Lennon’s life is him letting go of the grief of losing his mother at the age of 17. It’s an enjoyable listen and I just really like it.2
It’s All Over Now Baby Blue - Bob Dylan
Yeah I’m doing 2 Bob Dylan songs in one article… sue me. Well this is the “farewell song that ends Dylan’s 5th album, this is a trend that I quite enjoy. I will be honest I had never given this song a chance because i just wasn’t fond of the harmonica tune that opens the song and would immediately just skip it, but recently I finished Breaking Bad. Some of those who are reading this will know that Breaking Bad ends with the song It’s all over now baby blue, and this threw me i was stunned when i listened to it. It was great. I think this song perfectly encapsulates a song to end a movie or show or as it was intended to, end an album. The message i take from the song is that you can take good from a bad ending. I think this is why I have been so enthralled with this song as it just tells us all to take silver linings from a negative… or I could be completely misinterpreting it but to me this is what feels right. The Dylans untamed vocals in this song gives me this feeling of excitement of what is yet to come as it just feels like he was so passionate while recording this track.
Thank you for taking the time to read this I know my writing is a bit primitive and unprofessional but it will get better. I hope.
john coltrane has enthralled me
This was an informative and balanced list Charlie! I really appreciate the Bob Dylan as a big fan myself, and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is a beautiful song, and Joan Baez does a great version too.
